President Barack Obama's Weekly Address Saturday, July 31, 2010 Detroit, Michigan

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/31/2010 07:15 AM
Detroit, MI...Hello everyone. I’m speaking to you from the GM auto plant here in Detroit, Michigan, where a hopeful story is unfolding in a place that’s been one of the hardest hit in America. In the twelve months before I took office, American auto companies lost hundreds of thousands of jobs. Sales plunged 40 percent. Liquidation was a very real possibility. Years of papering over tough problems and failing to adapt to changing times – combined with a vicious economic crisis – brought an industry that’s been the symbol of our manufacturing might for a century to the brink of collapse...

Judge Rejects Forest Service’s Plan on Fire Retardant

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/30/2010 09:15 PM
SEATTLE — A federal judge has ruled that the federal Forest Service’s plan for using fire retardant to fight wildfires violates the law because it does not ensure protections for threatened and endangered species of fish and other animals. Dropped from airplanes and helicopters, reddish clouds of retardant are often the most visible tool used to fight wildfires, particularly in rugged areas of the West. Yet chemicals in the most common retardants can hurt wildlife, particularly when they miss their mark. In some cases, large numbers of fish have been killed when retardant has been dropped into lakes and streams.

CALAVERAS VISITORS BUREAU UPDATE

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/30/2010 08:35 PM
Hello CVB Members and Friends! Here’s a quick update on some of the things we’ve been up to...Calaveras Takes the Gold…Again! Hopefully by now you have heard that Calaveras County took the Gold again at the California State Fair! This year’s theme “Passport to Adventure” played out with a lifted yellow Jeep as the centerpiece of the display. Whimsically spilling out from the Jeep are several Calaveras Adventures. There is also a dedication to Mark Twain where fairgoers can read some of his original writings. We have about 100 volunteers from throughout the County who work the exhibit each day giving out tons of Calaveras literature. Comments so far indicate that attendance this year has surpassed previous years. We have already had visitors at the Visitors Center who came here because of the exhibit. Someone even called and ordered Calaveras t-shirts after seeing them as part of the display! The fair runs through August 1st....

Lungren did not vote in favor of H.R. 5982. Lungren released the following statement....
