Calaveras Arts Council presents Out of the Sea and River of Skulls~by Charity Maness
The Gallery Group, a group of 20+ local artists under the CAC umbrella, created a beautifully themed show titled ‘Out of the Sea’ currently showing at the Arts Council Gallery 22 Main Street, San Andreas. When a theme is chosen each artist creates a vision of their own from a medium of their choosing incorporating the theme. This shows theme being Out of the Sea brought forth amazing art pieces from a multitude of mediums. Watercolor, aluminum casting, photography, stoneware, acrylic, basaltic clay, sculpture ceramic, earthen ware and giclee, to name a few. When speaking with artist Lori Kelly, I found that she had been painting for as long as she could ....

remember, painting as a child, motivated by her mother. Though carefully budgeting her time between work, home, and painting, Lori managed to create an amazing acrylic image of old and new, sand and sea, leaving each viewer to interpret the painting in their own way.
The show is set up so that the visitor can view each piece at leisure, stopping to admire one or more for longer periods if they so choose. Also available for purchase, local jewelry, books by local authors, music, etc. Though this show continues through the end of August and most all of the art pieces are for sale, it was mentioned that in November and December this same art group has a show of affordable pieces of art. Where one can get a local piece of art for a gift at a wonderfully low cost.
Also highlighted at the opening of Out of the Sea was author J.F Langton signing her first novel ‘River of Skulls.’ The journey begins as the Californian breaks through the fog of the San Francisco bay, the city not paved with gold as rumored, but by sand, mud and rotting debris. After several fires had destroyed the city, the makeshift hotels, gambling halls, and brothels were quickly rebuilt as inexpensively as possible to house the constant flow of those in search of their fortunes within the Sierra Nevada foothills. In search of gold.
J.F. Langton grips the reader with her very first sentence, making them want to read on; to learn more of our history, our past. She paints a picture of an era so well documented in historical journals that the once dry history becomes alive through her written word.
A local, Janet dedicates some of her time working at the Calaveras Historical Society’s Red barn Museum in San Andreas. Clearly a history buff, the knowledge shining through in this, her first novel, River of Skulls, translated from El Rio de las Calaveras.
